Family history predicts cardiac risk

Relatives of patients with first or second-degree die of heart disease before age 60 have a higher risk of heart problems alone, confirmed that a large study from Denmark .

In a new study from Denmark followed four million people in the last three decades, the researchers found that people with a parent or sibling who died young of heart problems are about twice as likely as other diagnosed with coronary heart disease before age 50.

They also double the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

None of gene terms means heart disease, said Dr. Amit Khera, a preventive cardiologist not involved in the research.

“Just because of the high risk does not mean that you will have a heart attack,” says Dr.. Khera, who directs preventive cardiology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. But, he said, the findings underscore the importance of family history – from a young age.

How the study was conducted

The study, conducted by researchers at the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen, the people involved were born after 1949. Between 1978 and 2008, nearly 130,000 of them are diagnosed with some form of heart disease before age 50.

This increases their chances when the first-degree relative died of heart problems before age 60, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

But the risk also increased when a second-degree relative. The risk of coronary heart disease, for example, was 43% higher in people with second-degree relative who died before the age of 60.
